Sex and Vanity

Kevin Kwan

In the dark days of Covid-19, any small distraction is so very welcome. Sex and Vanity is a slab of gooey chocolate cake with those fancy chocolate curls all over it. The relatively straight-forward story of “girl meets boy, falls for boy, then fights it like crazy to not be in love with him” is a good one, with plenty of opportunities for plot twists. Throw in a ton of wildly wealthy people, exotic locals, expensive clothing, snarky stabs at preppie WASPs,  and sublime art. Add some soul-searching about racism and classicism, some over-the-top characters, and you’ve got a winner. Kevin Kwan, author of the Crazy, Rich Asians series knows how to create a perfect mix of frothy soap opera and meaty plot.
