Bunker

Buildings for The End Times

Bradley Garrett

With the rise of AI, climate change, ICE,  and articles about people like Peter Thiel moving to Argentina, it’s not wonder there is an interest in bunkers. While living in a safe, underground space has always been popular (for instance, the vast underground city of Cappadocia in Turkey) may be ideal, a hidey-hole backyard bomb shelter may be just as appealing in a pinch. Going to ground is an ancient instinct.

Garrett, a long-time urban explorer, has seen some of the most vast and complex bunkers ever built. Some without permission, many others in the research of this book. There are old missile silos being converted into multi-million dollar condos, complete with sandy beaches and “grocery stores” built in. Or more economically, you can buy an old military storage building, muck out the cow poop, and DYI your very own bunker for $35k. How are you going to get there with the “big one” comes (whatever you feel it will be)? Well, that’s your problem. Most of what Garrett call the “dread merchants” have a least a small streak of cynicism about their business. Only the true believes, like the Mormons, seem to really believe in their prepper activities. Fascinating and more than a bit disturbing.
