Captivating Portraits of Deserted Homes
Bryan Sansivero
Photographer Sansivero doesn’t considered himself a photographer of abandoned buildings (known as “urbex” photography), but he is interested in America culture. There are more than a million abandoned houses across the United States, often hidden in plain site. Most of Sansivero’s photos show rooms left as though the owner went out to the store and never came back. Clothing draped over chairs, jewelry siting on a dresser, books stacked by a chair, art still handing on the walls, even meals set on the table…all rotting away and covered in dust. Some abandoned homes tell a story. They show hospital beds and oxygen tanks, and the inference of what happened to the owner is clear. Still others, like the home of the “famous artist” are surreal. Piles of valuable books sit stacked on a desk and art by well-known artists hangs on the wall. Yet it as all simply been left. There are a few comments on why some homes have been abandoned – often due to family feuds over inheritance. But mostly, the eerie rooms just leave the viewer unsettled and full of questions. After reading this collection, you’ll soon find yourself giving the overgrown house in your neighborhood and close second and third look.
