John Hill
Despite being an architecture fan, I was delighted to find in this book a number of buildings and architects that I wasn’t familiar with. There were certainly some of the biggest and most familiar names – Frank Lloyd Wright, Atoni Gaudi and Oscar Niemeyer and their well known projects – the New York and Bilbao Guggenheim museums, Fallingwaters – but also plenty of smaller buildings. Despite being lesser known internationally, these buildings and their designers were unique and innovative trendsetters. Shockingly new and iconic buildings include The Tjibaou Cultural Centre in Nouméa, New Caledonia (near New Zealand), Kandalama Hotel in the jungles of Dambulla, Sri Lanka, and the Church of the Light, Ibaraki-shi, Osaka, Japan.
100 Years 100 Buildings was clearly written for the neophyte interested in dipping a toe into the vast subject of architecture. Each building is given a one page description and one or two images. While this keeps the book concise, it doesn’t do justice to the many aspects of these buildings. Additionally, some photos are close-up details or framed in such a way to make it hard to distinguish the topic. However, most are large and clear exterior shots. An excellent starter book on learning more about some of the most influential and lovely buildings in the last 100 years.
